M&K show- AVbuzz sunday program

Hi, I went to the sunday program, joining the AVbuzz show in the M&K showroom.

I would like to write my observations and opinion. Please excuse my English, and it is in English because I don't want to type so many Chinese.

This is not an offical report, just my feelings. I am only a beginner and I have no golden ear.



The equipments used today are M&K s150 7.1 + mx-350. Room equalization only with Denon 4306 (auto setup with auto eq). DVD player A1xv with Denon link connecting to Denon 4306 as preamp. Power amp using Parasound flagship A51 + A21. The strange thing I see is the placement of mx-350 facing the wall away from the listerning position. If I understand correctly, the wall is not solid concrete and is lining with wood and fabric, with acoustic material and space inside.

Before the show starts, the M&K representive describing the new s150, with two switches on the back of the speaker. The switches can change the horizontal dispersion between wide and narrow. The M&K representive said the old s150 can not be change, and the old s150 is narrow dispersion by default ( which is different from MartinTong's s150 because his s150 is wide dispersion-confirmed by US M&K).
Stereo music was played from Net radio and IPOD. I would say the materials they chose instantly gave me a feeling of too much 50 or 60hz. Is it called booming? I don't know. I have limited experience, don't ask me. The bass is not as fast as I heard before from other M&K subwoofer user. But I can't really tell if there are too much 100-300hz because only one song is played.
Upper note extension is limited. Felt like soundstage is not as wide, and not as lively without upper note harmonics. I can't say it is dead, but increase treble tone should improve the situation a bit.

After stereo music, next is the Chinese film 猛龍- one of the gunfight scene . Before I went to the show, I watched the whole movie in the morning. The gun fight scene has very good gun popping sounds, to me is very realistic. MP5 sounds different than M4....all guns sounds differently. The scene also has some bomb explosion sounds. The M&K represenative said if the subwooferis put in the corner, it can provide bass with less effort, so we won't need to turn up the volume and the bass reporduction has less distortion. Well, I don't agree on that. I think if you put it in the corner and it is louder, it is louder only on certain hz, for example 50hz. In this case, the rest of the bass will be cover by this 50hz and you need to turn the subwoofer down because it is too boomy........... I might be wrong, because I am only a beginner.
The bomb explosion bass was reproduced pretty good, but the window cracking sounds were not as ear catching, which M&K speakers should be famous for.
