LOFI master,
Sorry for using english, writing board is dead.
You are master grade wor, I am a little student making toys only
IN MY SYSTEM the floating platform has no adverse effects on the bass/overall sound(not that i can observe so far), I find it adds dynamic to the music, improve sound stage and a more coherent image. The quantity of bass is neither reduced nor increased, the bass is in fact faster and firmer than my previous set up, while using the original Solid steel board has a somewhat "hollow" sound compares to the floating platform. The improvement is so great that I can't find any problem out of it (if there is any).
I believe the added mass from the top granite plate do help to firm up the bass a bit(compares to my previous setup), while the air in balls under the granite plate take care of vibration to and from the TT which helps to provide darker background and improves sound stage/image:question2:
My speculation is that direct usage of such soft material (balls, plastic mats, or spring.....)under equipment may have the results/disadvantages you mentioned. Only speculation, no evidence to support.
In fact a company makes top quality isolation platform is doing the same thing in the same direction but with more accurate/expensive/better components/materials which make their isolation platform more effective in isolation vibration and more expensive at the end. check their site at the following link:

they have some scientific explanation which I don't really understand.....
