Watched it last night, originally not sure what to expect only that it was about a mother trying to find her lost son. However, the movie turned out to be quite a gem and if you like drama and good acting/direction, this is to be one of the must-see BDs of 2009, Clint Eastwood being the director certainly could only make it better!
Plot, not to give out too much, about a single mother lost her son and was eventually 'given' by the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) what they insisted was her son, who obviously was not, it went on leading to story revealing the corruption, brutality and decay of the LAPD in the 30's, to horrible story of young boys being mass murdered. As expected Angelina Jolie is more than just a pretty face, being very restrained as probably a working class woman in the 30’s would have behaved, not at all like her roles in other gun-slinging movies, this tells how good an actress she is, supporting cast John Malkovich, as expected, always intense and rewarding to watch, others were in good order as well, not stellar though I would say.
Video I would be say quite excellent, do note the color is rather subdued due possibly to Director's intention to match the mood of the movie and the film's era, with plenty of good contrast and dark scenes. Audio, DTS-HD, but this is mainly a dialogue driven movie so that is not really important here. Extras are OK but I would have love to see more historical background of this movie, which is based on a true story. Can those of you having young children imagine the pain of losing your young ones and not knowing what happened to them, and yet having the courage to take on the authority to find the truth?
All in all, highly recommended. Be warned, those who look for movies to flex their sub-woofer or 7.1 system, this is probably not what you want, but those who like a great story, great acting with as usual the fine touches from Clint Eastwood, nothing over the edge to beg attention, this may be it. I was immersed in the movie and never thought it being bored for one minute, ie, not much useless wasted scene here. Give it a try.
