Denon 2910/3910 firmware upgrade

I did the upgrade(from version 4 to 8) on my 2910 , but absolutely no improvement in sound n picture. The problem with these so-call upgrades are that Denon did not explain clearly what they are for. Some owner in the U.S. forum even claimed the new firmware created new problem for them. For example, the player will no longer recognize the 16x9 signal n convert it to 4x3 all the time. So, the guy was searching a lot of places for the original firmware.

Please think hard before you do the upgrade, because you maybe voiding your warranty too.

Here are some instructions for Denon 2910 :

1) How to check your firmware version :

"Remove any discs from the unit.

To check the frmware turn off the player, not standby.

Hold on the front panel Play and Open/Close.

When Loading appears you should see the play and pause icons on the front panel. At which point release the buttons.

Then on the remote press Menu, 3, 2, 6, 5, Menu.

You should then see ESS ????-?

The last digit is the important one. If it is less then 8 check with your dealer."

2) Please reset your player before update :

1/ make sure there is no disc in the player and it is in stop mode

2/ hold and press the following 3 buttons at the same time on the player (not remote)

3/ forwards skip button…..play button…..&…open/close button.

4/ hold down for 5 sec until you see the front display light up.

Thank you for your comment. I did the upgrade yesterday and haven't tested all the features yet. Can you elaborate more on the problem the player will no longer recognize the 16x9 signal n convert it to 4x3 all the time. ?

The version of my 2910 was "2" and was upgraded to "A".

The followings are my temp results :
1) Can read region 1 and region 3 DVDs.
2) Can read 16:9 anamorphic DVD (Terminator 3 region 3)
3) Can read 16:9 letterbox DVD (Titanic region 1)
4) Output OK for Component and S-Video
5) Can output 480p/576p, 720p and 1080i through HDMI (to my AE500)
6) Can output 480p/576p through DVI-D (to my plasma)

Ah... there's one problem... I found that there was a small grey line on the top edge of the screen (within the dark horizontal bar) when displaying through HDMI for 720p and 1080i (not in 480p) for 16:9 movies. The line will be much less significant when I switch the HDMI black level to Enhanced.

Improvement :
I found the the Black Level was improved then before when switched to Enhanced. (I couldn't find much difference between Normal/Enhanced before upgrade)

My unit was originally version 4 n did not know version 2 exist, maybe you bought your unit very early. I bought mine in Oct.2004.

The 16x9 is not my problem but somebody at AVSforum. I saw a huge difference between Enhanced or Normal black, even at version 4.

Just make sure you don't upgrade to a firmware version that erase your ALL-zone feature, since some of those firmwares are for Europe only n HK Denon will not provide any help if you want to revert it, even within the warranty period.

Then... do you have the grey line problem ? I found that it exists in both version 8 and version A.
