反差太大救星 - PS Contrast Mask Technique

What can you do when you take a picture when the contrast is too high, what can you do? There is a Photoshop technique called Contrast Mask. It is a very useful technique.

Sorry Tony ! I used your photo for the tutorial because you thought the contrast was too high (反差太大). I hope you don't mind!

Step 1

Open the photo in Photoshop

Under the "Layer" menu, select "Duplicate layer..."

Rename the new layer as "Contrast Mask", then click OK

Under the "Image" menu, select "Adjustment"/"Desaturate" (or use the keyboard shortcut ctrl-shift-U for PC or cmd-shift-U for mac)

Under the "Image" menu, select Adjustment/Invert (or use the keyboard shortcut crtl-I for PC or cmd-I for mac)

Step 6

In the "Layers" window, select "Overlay" to blend the layers

Select "Gaussian Blur" from the "Filter" menu

The next step is very important. Enlarge the image to 100% if necessary, then adjust the Radius, look at edges between dark object and light background and make sure you don't see any "halo" effect around the edges. A value between 0 to 20 is usually best, smaller value is usually better. There is no exact value, it will differ from picture to picture. Use your own eyes!

Step 9

Next adjust the opacity of the contrast mask. usually, you don't need 100%. Anything between 30-90% may be necessary depending on individual images. Use your own eyes again!

Step 10

Do the usual Photoshop adjustment now. Adjust Levels, Curves and Saturation as necessary to make the image look better. I did not adjust anything more for this demonstration though

Final step, flatten the image

Done! The final image contrast has been decreased. This technique has brought out the shadow details without blowing out the highlights
