There's an easy way to tell if you have the old or new disc. if you have the old one both the feature film disc and the second disc are gray. If you have the new one the special features disc is gray and the feature film disc is a bluish color.

Cam hing, did you check in Amp / Player whether the DRC (Dynamic Range Control or something similar) had been turned on (or auto) *while the disc is playing* ?

If so, try to turn it OFF to see if you could experience a difference ? I know in Onkyo amp that could be turned off via the "L Night" button, but not too sure what's the equivalence in Denon.
